They think it’s all Rover ... it is now for me at the Albion

-

They think it’s all over...it is now. Alas, that’s the situation for me as after almost 15 years of being involved at Albion Rovers, I have decided to wear the club tie for the last time.

It has been an unbelievable journey over the years that has taken in cup semi-finals, play-offs, relegation, promotion and, of course, winning the league. Breathless is the only word to describe it! There has been much satisfaction in helping to deliver a three-year schools project that has seen the club work with every primary school locally, as well as working with the police and the NHS, to deliver anti-drug messages and promote healthy living.

I must be honest though and admit that there were two huge results off the pitch.

The first was the delivery of free football coaching to hundreds of children over the years during school holidays.

And the other was a trip to Auschwitz with local children to promote and support the anti-sectarian group, Sense Over Sectarianism. Both events represent great examples of football having a positive effect in the community.

There were some funny moments too, as I often introduced myself at away matches as either the club dietitian or fitness director. And then proceeded to polish off the plateful of pies on offer with considerable relish!

However, no doubt the abiding memory will be that of the club winning the league trophy, and the way the players dedicated their achievement to Elspeth, the much-missed late wife of club secretary, Paul Reilly.

The Rovers will go on, and hopefully stay in League One. And I leave with great memories of special people, who contributed so much behind the scenes and never got the credit they deserve.

Guys like Lew MacWilliam and families like the Redmonds.

Football at that level is made by people, and for many winning a league or a trophy is worth more than money can buy.

Good luck Albion Rover FC, you’ll always hold a special place in my heart.
