Maths showcase

Coat b r i d g e H i g h’s inaugural taste of a new maths- flavoured showcase turned out to be a calculated success.

The school’s first ever “Pi Day celebration” saw third- year students honour the mathematical constant – the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.

In-a-spin staff from the maths department hosted fun- filled activities, including making Pi clocks, bracelets and paper chains and a competition to see who could recite Pi to the most decimal places.

Pupils from the Pi committee were going round in circles as they provided lessons for various subjects across the whole school.

It wasn’t all about adding figures, though, as the maths department were more than happy to take away pounds from their pockets as they collected £100 for St Andrew’s Hospice.

The funds were raised during a coffee morning that saw pies and Pi-shaped cakes on the menu.

A spokesperson for Coatbridge High told the Advertiser: “We are delighted with the success of our first ever Pi Day celebration; there was something for everyone to enjoy on the day.

“The maths department really stepped up to the challenge and delivered a memorable event.

“Congratulations go to Justin Harvie, who won the competition to find out who could recite Pi to the most decimal places with his 43 places.

“We’d like to give our thanks to Hugh Black Butchers and Scotmid for their raffle donations and Lees who provided a treat for all participants; this all helped to make the day so memorable.

“Unfortunately we had to cancel a ‘Pi the Teacher’ event we had planned due to adverse weather. Over 40 teachers and 40 sixth year pupils ‘volunteering’ to be pied – hopefully they won’t get so lucky next time!”
