Midnight ramblers take steps to help

- Judith Tonner

Supporters of St Andrew’s Hospice were tickled pink as they pounded the pavements in the Airdrie charity’s ladies’ midnight walk.

600 walkers took part in the annual challenge, walking routes of eight, 10 or 13 miles from Ravenscraig Sports Centre to Carfin, New Stevenston, Holytown, Mossend and Motherwell.

It was the ninth year in which the event has taken place and, with sponsor money still rolling in, organisers hope the grand total will reach £80,000.

After taking part in a clubbercise warm-up, the walkers danced along with Coatbridge entertainer Edward Reid, the ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ favourite, who got the event under way at the starting line.

Hospice head of fundraising John Brady said: “We know that many people go the extra mile to raise money for St Andrew’s Hospice. In this case it was up to 13 extra miles.

“We want to say a huge thank you to all who took part. £ 80,000 is vital in enabling us to provide a high standard of specialist palliative care to the people of North and South Lanarkshire.”

Organisers thanked the event sponsors Underground Inspection Services and all the volunteers and staff who ensured the event was completed successfully.
