Fred is returning to make Lanarkshire laugh again

- Jonathan Geddes

He is one of Scotland’s most popular funnymen – and Fred MacAulay will be back in Lanarkshire next month.

The comedian, TV and radio presenter and writer will play East Kilbride’s Arts Centre on Sunday, July 30.

The evening will showcase Fred’s newest material, ahead of his trip to the Edinburgh Fringe in August, his 29th appearance at the massive Edinburgh festival.

With so much happening politically at home and abroad, there is no shortage of material for comedians.

Are you worried about the future after Brexit?

How did you celebrate the triggering of Article 50?

And speaking of ‘triggering’, could Trump really kick off the war that will not only end all wars, but the whole freaking planet?

Fred might not have the answers to political questions, or else he would have been on Question Time, but one thing is for sure, after nearly 30 years on stage, he will have a good laugh about it all, and so will the audience.

Fred’s brand of humour mixes cheek, sarcasm and satire and he has entertained people for three decades.

He said: “Every comedian worth his salt has Trump material.

“I’m probably the only comic who has suffered personally as a result of his election.

“Turnberry is one of my favourite golf courses, but as a small personal protest against Trump’s blatant racism and misogyny I’ve decreed that I’ll never play the course again whilst it’s under his stewardship.

“It’s this kind of gesture that will hopefully make Trump think again...”

If you have seen Fred before, you know it is good comedy.

And for new fans, it is worth going and see the man once described as “Scotland’s rising star of comedy” and now called a “Legend” in reviews.

MacAulay’s national TV appearances include stints on Mock the Week, QI, Have I Got News For You, and The Late Late Show.

He is perhaps best known for the long-running BBC Radio Scotland programme MacAulay and Co.

It ran for 18 years before stopping in 2015, letting Fred focus on his stand-up career again.

Tickets to see Fred are available from www.sllcboxoffice.co.uk, by calling into the venue itself or by phoning 01355 261000.

They are priced at £14/£12concession and the show starts at 8pm. Visit www. fredmacaulay.com or follow him on Twitter at @fredmacaulay for more information on Fred.
