Just the business as Sir Tom backs project
Leading figure is supporting hospice fundraiser
St Andrew’s Hospice has a new celebrity supporter for its latest capital appeal fundraiser – businessman and philanthropist Sir Tom Hunter.
He has lent his weight to charity project “You’re Hired!”, which sees teams from local businesses, part i c u l a r l y g raduates and apprentices, take on entrepreneurial tasks to raise funds for the hospice’s rebuilding project.
Each team will be invited to pitch their money- making project to a judging team in the contest’s version of “the boardroom” in February, with the winners earning the opportunity to be mentored for a day by Sir Tom.
He said: “This is a fabulous initiative to encourage many people and organisations to support this fantastic appeal; I’d encourage everyone to get behind this.”
Among the local firms who have signed up are North Lanarkshire Council, Starfish, Morgan Sindall and Tesco, with participants’ planned events to date including race nights, gala days and football tournaments.
Capital appeal director Karen McFadyen said: “Corporate social responsibility is a core discipline for businesses these days, and this challenge provides a fun environment for teams to enhance their business skills while giving something back to the community.”
The “You’re Fired!” project is part of the ongoing £9 million fundraiser to completely renovate and refurbish the 30-year-old St Andrew’s Hospice building on Henderson Street.
It will include creating 21 en-suite single rooms, three shared occupancy wards, overnight facilities for relatives, garden access for all patients, and a complete upgrade of the building with new state-of-the art facilities.
Hospice officials recent l y announced that £5m has been raised to date; work is currently underway and is due to be completed next spring.
In-patients are currently being cared for at a temporary facility at Wester Moffat Hospital, although the hospice’s outpatient services are still being provided from the Henderson Street base.
Donations to the capital appeal can be made by texting NINE30£5 to 70070, and further information on supporting the hospice is available at www. standrews-hospice.com
