MSP Simpson gets Brexit role
Central Scotland MSP Graham Simpson has been elected as convener of a key Scottish Parliament committee whose responsibilities include scrutinising Brexit legislation.
The Conservative politician was elected to chair Holyrood’s delegated powers and law reform body, succeeding party colleague John Scott.
Among the committee’s tasks will be overseeing the progress of the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill.
Mr Simpson said:“It’s a privilege to be elected convener, especially at a time when people are waiting to see what impact Brexit will have, not only on Scotland but the UK as well.
“The committee has a big job on its hands but we are up to the task and will have tough questions for both the Scottish and UK governments.”
He added:“The committee isn’t all about Brexit. There are many other pieces of legislation that the Scottish Government wants to pass into law and it’s only right and proper that they are examined thoroughly by an independent cross-party committee.”
The regional list MSP will also be continuing in his role on the local government and communities committee.
