REACT will improve patients’ experience

Monklands scheme

- Graham Miller

A new Rapid Emergency Assessment Care Team ( REACT) area has been officially opened within Monklands Hospital’s A&E department.

REACT has introduced a new way of working which will improve the waiting time to first assessment.

Dr Gordon McNeish, consultant in emergency medicine, told the Advertiser: “REACT is a new way of treating people as they present at the emergency department.

“This gives us a more robust approach to how we see and treat patients and enables everything to work more smoothly.

“Diagnostics are also carried out more quickly which means all patients should have a shorter journey through the emergency department.”

REACT is a £750,000 investment which also expanded the size of the emergency department and enhanced the layout.

Clinical and managerial staff worked together on the designs and plans for the improved department.

Magdalena Kosztowna, emergency department staff nurse, said: “We are very happy with the new REACT area within the emergency department.

“This will allow us to provide better, more patient-centred care, for our patients – especially for medical referrals.

“It will also allow for quicker processing, and additionally we have more space and facilities to treat patients now.”

Calum Campbell, NHS Lanarkshire chief executive, added: “Everyone knows Monklands is a great hospital but it is an old hospital.

“The new REACT area will improve the experience for our patients and enable staff to continue to provide excellent care in a much better working environment.”
