Outrage over heartless bullies making life hellish for distraught teenage pupil
Emotions were running high among the Advertiser’s Facebook community as readers reacted to our shocking story about a 13-year-old girl being subjected to a sustained campaign of vile verbal abuse at Coatbridge High School.
Heather Paterson posted: “I know exactly how this poor family feel. My daughter (15) has been out of school since April due to two years of terrible bullying.
“She’s gone from being bubbly and outgoing to not leaving the house at all and now gets home tutors... and nothing has happened to the bullies.”
Brian Gilmour added: “Utterly heartbreaking. Had a few instances of bullying at my daughter’s primary school and never got a resolution I felt was appropriate.
“These days it all seems to be about protecting or making excuses for the bullies.”
Kimberley Buchanan Melville commented: “Disgusting. This is all you hear about with that school, they definitely need to get a grip of it. And parents need to drum it into their children that bullying ain’t tolerated.”
Lesley Bowen said: “I got bullied at school 35 years ago. It’s tragic that we have come no further in the decades that have followed. I can’t imagine how much worse it is now with social media.
“The only thing I can say now is that it won’t last forever and it will get better.”
Safeera Sharif suggested a possible solution: “My child is going through something similar in high school. The whispering and sarcastic comments are getting my child down to the point he wants to be home-schooled.
“But we need to have more talks with schools to see what we can do, and the teachers to encourage kids not to say nasty things.”
Jim Williamson opined: “Absolutely shocking that this has been allowed to happen to this poor girl.”
