Bish­ops pros­trate them­selves dur­ing a glit­ter­ing cer­e­mony at st Peter’s Basil­ica in which Pope John Xxiii ap­points them to the college of car­di­nals. as well as ly­ing face­down on the floor as a sign of their hu­mil­ity, some of the 23 new ap­pointees pulled their scarlet robes over their heads. as is tra­di­tion, the pon­tiff (who was elected the same year) later gave each of them a gold ring to wear, sig­ni­fy­ing their new ti­tle. 1958
