While the Greeks kept death off-stage, Ro­man plays were keen to in­clude blood and gore. This may have been an ef­fort to at­tract au­di­ences from the char­iot rac­ing and glad­i­a­to­rial bat­tles, which were much more pop­u­lar pas­times.
