While the cho­rus could rely on their chant­ing reach­ing the au­di­ence from the or­ches­tra, the ac­tors per­formed on a raised stage to en­sure they were more vis­i­ble and audi­ble to the au­di­ence. Ac­tors not up to the job may have re­sented hav­ing to per­form on a pedestal — it made them an easy tar­get for the crit­i­cal au­di­ence, who would throw food and even stones at per­form­ers they didn’t like.
