Dig deeper into your DNA

Family Tree DNA

While Family Tree DNA’S Family Finder kit offers a basic package of ethnicity estimates along the lines of Ancestrydna, the service also offers a number of add-ons that it make a treasure trove for genealogists with a bigger budget. With the largest databases of Y chromosomes (passed from fathers to sons) and mitochondrial DNA (passed down the maternal line), Family Tree DNA offers various kits that allow you to explore your paternal and maternal lines in-depth, with prices ranging from $169 to $649.

African Ancestry

Due to the slave trade, many people of Afro-caribbean descent don’t know much about their family history before abolition, while conventional DNA services can be imprecise. This Us-based service has the largest database of African lineages, so can not only identify an African country of origin, such as Nigeria, but also specify African ethnic groups, such as Igbo or Fulani. Kits are sold separately to trace your maternal and paternal lines.

Geno 2.0

This kit from the National Geographic Society’s Genographic Project is a nonprofit that lets you learn more about your ancestry while contributing to global research into the migration of ancient humans. However, its £150 price tag puts it at the top end of DNA services, while only offering a very broad overview of your maternal and paternal lines. However, these reports are as engaging and informative as you would expect from the National Geographic.
