Keeping container plants healthy

Most container composts are enriched to keep plants happy for a month or so, but after that they need a supplementary feed with liquid fertiliser once a fortnight.

Fruiting trees and shrubs in pots need a high-potassium liquid feed in spring, followed by monthly applications of a general-purpose liquid feed through the summer.

Mulch them with well-rotted organic matter to add extra goodness and help the pot compost retain moisture.
