Plant out tasty sweetcorn

-

MY love for devouring this crop leaves my face smothered in butter! Home-grown sweetcorn is utterly delicious because one secret to maximum sweetness is freshness, so get it from plot to plate as quickly as possible. this tender veg hates cold soil but will romp away as soon as the soil warms, so my transplants are going in now (you can also sow seed direct). Most gardeners know to plant their corn in grids.

it’s because sweetcorn is pollinated by wind (not bees, like most other crops). the grid method (approx. 10 x 10inch spacings) means that each plant is easily pollinated by its neighbour, resulting in well-filled cobs. i’m all for that!
