1 Re­move dead fo­liage and flow­ers to cre­ate a tidy look and lessen the chance of storm dam­age, which can leave plants vul­ner­a­ble to pests and dis­ease.

2 Soil is still warm af­ter sum­mer and reg­u­larly damp­ened by show­ers, mak­ing this a good time for plant­ing. Roots will de­velop through the win­ter, though you may need to pro­tect any top-growth with mulch or a cloche in the worst weather.
