It’s the last chance for sowing hardy annual seed for an early show next year – best in a warm corner, cold frame or cloche.
Sow hardy peas and broad beans for much earlier crops next year in the hope that a mild winter lets them come through.
It’s also the last chance to sow green manure seeds on bare soil and empty beds under soft fruit, trees and roses.
Once price-reduced by the garden centres, buy ‘gone-over’ potted chrysanthemums, cut back and keep in a cold greenhouse or frame for flowering next year.
