Is Nigella an onion?

Amateur Gardening - - Ask The Ag Experts! -

Q I found this jar on the spice rack and am confused. Are they onion seeds or Nigella? Vivien Drake, Heathfield, East Sussex

A Nigella sativa seeds are used in cooking, particularly in Indian and middle eastern recipes.

The plant belongs to the buttercup family and the small, black seeds look very much like onion seeds.

They have a peppery taste and are also known as black cumin and by other names including Kalonji, Roman coriander and black caraway.

Nigella seeds are also called black onion seeds
