Amateur Gardening - - Ask Anne! -

■ ‘Ashmead’s Kernel’. This late dessert variety also stores well.

■ ‘Beauty of Bath’. A sweet, early eating dessert variety.

■ ‘Grenadier’. My friend’s favourite cooker. Ripens early-mid season.

■ ‘King of the Pippins’ Of French origin, ripening in late autumn.

■ Of pears, our ‘Doyenne du Comice’ is often badly scab-affected. But ‘Buerre Hardy’ or ‘Concorde’ (right) are much better.
