Q How do I deal with scale insects on a bay tree? Jilly Robin (via email)

A As you are probably using bay leaves in cooking, use BugClear Fruit & Veg. Based on rape seed oil, it clogs the pest’s breathing pores, which kills it. It is recommend for several pests.

Additionally, because scale insects suck sap and debilitate growth, feed your tree with sulphate of potash monthly from April to September.

Sprinkle it over the root area at 1oz (28g) per sq m and water it in.
