Planting and aftercare
■ For best results, plant in partial shade, in humus-rich soil that does not dry out.
■ They will also grow in full shade, although flowering may be reduced and any variegation less bright.
■ Fork in weed-free organic matter before planting.
■ Plant potted plants at any time; plant bare-root rhizomes in autumn.
■ Lily-of-the-valley can be uncomfortably vigorous when happy, but if it’s flowering well, who has the heart to remove it?
■ Snip off any green-leaved shoots from variegated varieties as soon as you see them.
■ Mulch in autumn, using weed-free organic matter.
