Top tips for potatoes

Amateur Gardening - - A Gardener’s Miscellany -

1 To maximise potato yields, the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) recommends that all shoots should be rubbed off maincrop potatoes before planting, and that shoots more than 2in (5cm) long should be removed from first and second earlies.

2 The first crop of early potatoes usually comprises a few tubers big enough to eat, but most are too small. If, after removal of the larger tubers, the whole plant is placed back in the soil and watered regularly, many of the tiny tubers will swell and be ready for eating a few weeks later.
