QI have a raised bed with three rows of lilies, 12in (30cm) between each row. Is there room to grow onions in the bed as well? C Plumridge, via email

AUnfortunately, there is insufficient room between your rows of lilies to grow big bulb onions.

There is, however, space to accommodate smaller spring salad onions, such as ‘Guardsman’, ‘White Lisbon’, ‘Sentry’ or ‘Furio’.

If your local garden centre does not stock them, order seeds from Marshalls (& 0844 557 6700 or 8 marshallsseeds.co.uk).

Sow seeds thinly, 1⁄2in (1cm) deep, in soil fortified with well-rotted manure or compost and, when shoots are 6in (15cm) long, feed with Vitax Q4 or some other granular balanced fertiliser.

Large onions need room to develop
