I used to weed out all the rosettes of shep­herd’s purse (Capsella bursa-pas­toris, above) ev­ery win­ter, un­til I dis­cov­ered that the un­der­sides of the leaves har­bour aphids early in the year. Now I leave them for the la­dy­birds and nest­ing birds, and then re­move most of them in sum­mer.
