Keep vines un­der con­trol to get more grapes, says Lucy

SIT­TING un­der a per­gola draped in vines, glass of sau­vi­gnon blanc in your hand, you could be for­given for think­ing that you’re liv­ing the dream – and the good news is that gar­den­ers don’t need to wake up! Grow­ing grapes is a cinch (OK, so per­haps wine-mak­ing is more chal­leng­ing) so what ex­actly is in­volved?

At this time of year the ob­jec­tive is to keep the vig­or­ous growth of grapevines in check and max­imise bunch pro­duc­tion. Those of you with indoor grapes may be tack­ing th­ese tasks al­ready, and out­door vine grow­ers won’t be far be­hind. Let’s look at what to do, step by step (see right).
