Colchicum speciosum (AGm)

A multi-petalled, soft-pink bulbous perennial, giant meadow saffron will catch the low light of September and October. Seen here with heuchera, aster, burning bush, pennisetum and euphorbia, it needs full sun. H: 1ft (30cm).

Gentiana ‘Blue Silk’ (AGm)

Create pools of blue by planting autumn gentians in troughs. ‘Blue Silk’ has striking indigo trumpets that will also look lovely in a hanging basket with Festuca, orange dahlia ‘Gallery Art Deco’ and heather. Sun or semishade. H: 4in (10cm).

Verbena bonariensis ‘Lollipop’

Conveniently compact form of the wonderful long-flowering perennial, which is usually grown as a self-seeding annual. Try it in a container with a mix of grasses, including stipa and carex. Full sun. H: 2ft (60cm).
