Bob’s top tips for the week
Store root vegetables such as new potatoes, carrots and beetroots in a box of slightly damp sand to keep them almost fresh until Christmas.
Leeks need to be kept constantly moist, so make a trough alongside them and fill it at least twice a week.
Sow biennials now, before it’s too late! Time is ticking for foxgloves, Canterbury bells, stocks, hollyhocks (pictured), wallflowers, honesty, sweet rocket and teasels.
Sow spring cabbages, giving them plenty of space and water to ensure you have healthy plants you can plant out later to overwinter.
