Bob’s top tips for the week

Amateur Gardening - - Your Gardening Week -

1 Store root vegetables such as new potatoes, carrots and beetroots in a box of slightly damp sand to keep them almost fresh until Christmas.

2 Leeks need to be kept constantly moist, so make a trough alongside them and fill it at least twice a week.

3 Sow biennials now, before it’s too late! Time is ticking for foxgloves, Canterbury bells, stocks, hollyhocks (pictured), wallflowers, honesty, sweet rocket and teasels.

4 Sow spring cabbages, giving them plenty of space and water to ensure you have healthy plants you can plant out later to overwinter.
