Are delphiniums a doomed species?

Amateur Gardening - - Ask John Negus -

Is it almost impossible to grow delphiniums these days? Mine used to be beautiful, but now they are battered to bits by storms. At least I saw off the slugs using organic methods!

You are obviously good at growing delphiniums and I am sorry they

were smashed by the wind. Sadly, hollow stems are vulnerable to wind damage. Canes – one supporting each stem – should be tall enough to reach the top of the bloom. If they are not, the unsupported part of the stem at the top is liable to be snapped off.

Well done beating the slugs, as they are a menace this year.

Delphiniums are easily battered and preyed on by pests
