■ Cucumbers use aspirin to cure themselves. Research in Switzerland showed that cucumber plants produce a pulse of salicylic acid (aspirin) to fight off disease.

■ Chickweed (Stellaria media) is the very common garden weed, growing almost all-year round. When picked young, the leaves are refreshingly tasty in a salad – but wash them well.

■ The phrase ‘Salad Days’ comes from Shakespeare. In Antony and Cleopatra (written in 1606), Cleopatra uses it in reference to her youthful dalliances with Julius Caesar, when she was inexperienced, innocent and indiscreet!
