Huge barbel on light gear
CHARLIE COOPER tamed one of the best barbel of the season when he managed to land this 14 lb specimen on light gear intended for chub.
Fishing the River Thames in Oxfordshire, local angler Charlie managed to net the fish by the skin of his teeth.
He explained: “It fell to double sweetcorn hair-rigged to a size 12 hook.
“As I was after chub, I was using just 4 lb main line and a very old John Wilson Avon quivertip rod, which thankfully didn’t snap in two.
“It took a good 20 minutes to land, and I was so relieved when she eventually squeezed into my small landing net,” he added.
