What’s caught my at­ten­tion this week! Wa­ter­side watch

IT’s about three years since I’ve seen a grass snake swim across a river, and the week­end just gone I saw two on two dif­fer­ent beats of stream… a bit like buses.

Also, I man­aged to spot FIVE king­fish­ers on a sin­gle branch, all bob­bing, weav­ing, scan­ning the grav­els for min­nows. Less thrillingly, though, I also spot­ted a large, adult pole­cat stalk­ing some young par­tridges. There’s a big fear in East Anglia that a lot have es­caped, and can be just as de­struc­tive as mink.
