A stun­ning, four-piece, 9 ft rod that is eas­ily stored in the boot of a car. It is per­fect for tar­get­ing a va­ri­ety of coarse and sea species, from spec­i­men carp to mack­erel. It has a cast­ing weight of 20 to 50 gr, and comes com­plete with a cloth bag.

Paste can be a lethal bait on hard­fished, day ticket venues. I don’t think many an­glers get around to us­ing this stuff, ei­ther find­ing it too tricky to pre­pare or too fid­dly to use. In both cases I would ar­gue that it’s worth the ex­tra ef­fort, be­cause if you get paste right, it opens up a new world.

I can re­mem­ber many oc­ca­sions where I’ve turned to paste as a last re­sort and have gone from catch­ing al­most noth­ing to ‘emp­ty­ing’ fish­eries. I once caught 100 lb of tench on paste af­ter the bailiff told me that they hadn’t been show­ing well!

If you can’t be both­ered with mak­ing paste, you can buy it in tackle shops, but to get the best out of it, com­bine it with a sim­i­lar recipe ground­bait.
