FRESH from yet an­other cou­ple of tri­umphs ear­lier in the week at Pre­ston In­no­va­tions Bold­ings Pools, in Bridg­north, Shrop­shire, my mate, the inim­itable Penkridge­based bag­gin’ ma­chine Dave Brown (Dy­na­mite Maver Mid­lands) went on to win the 118-en­try Round Two of the Heron­brook Teams of Four Win­ter League, at the Slin­don, Ec­cle­shall, Stafford­shire, match mecca. He man­aged to catch 31 fish for a crack­ing 187 lb 8 oz of carp to 16 lb and eight F1s at Match Lake peg 5.

Trust and Canal & River Trust Canal Pairs Cham­pi­onship with part­ner Wed­nes­field’s Rob­bie Lloyd.

Well done Dave and Rob­bie! Next time I see Dave in a café hav­ing break­fast be­fore a match, I’ll shake his hand and maybe some of his match fish­ing good for­tune will rub off on me. I could do with it!

Sher­ratts Farm on the Trent has been in good sil­ver fish form. This 19 lb 7 oz match bag of dace and roach was caught on whip and wag­gler by Pete Hamil­ton.

Bar­bel to dou­bles on Mu­nic­i­pal with bream to 7 lb 2 oz, chub to 3 lb and plenty of dace. 18 lb bags of roach out of Sher­ratts Farm re­cently. An­dressey sec­tion for stacks of dace and roach. Chub weights to 18 lb on Bai­ley’s of late.

Mag­got feeder ef­fec­tive for the bar­bel and chub. Pole with worm and cast­ers do­ing the busi­ness for the bream. Whip and stick float with bronze mag­gots for a sil­ver fish a chuck.

What’s be­ing caught? The river is run­ning clear and is up just a tad. More rain needed. Lots of chub to 5 lb and dace be­ing caught, with a few bar­bel to 14 lb and a few roach. Tac­tics? Static baits, pre­dom­i­nantly luncheon meat nailed to the bot­tom for the bar­bel. Stick float and wag­gler with red and bronze mag­gots for the chub, dace and roach.

3 oz with some larger ones to 10 oz. Chublets start­ing to show, with a few big­ger chub and a few gud­geon. Pike nudg­ing dou­bles and lots of jacks to 3 lb. Derek Jack­son (3 Coun­ties) won Round One of the Ere­wash Val­ley Teams of Eight Win­ter League here with 11 lb 1 oz 8 dr – a brace of tench with perch and roach.

Tac­tics? Pole with chopped worm and cast­ers for the perch and tench. Pinkies, mag­gots and squatts over ground­bait for mixed sil­ver fish. Worm over mi­cro pel­lets, mag­gots and chopped worm feed for the bream. Drop shot­ting spin­ning and shop-bought dead­baits for the pike.

What’s be­ing caught? Bream to 3 lb, lots of skim­mers, roach to 8 oz, small rudd and lots of perch to 8 oz. The venue is stuffed full of jack pike around 5 lb, and the big­gest pike so far this year went 12 lb. Oc­ca­sional tench to 4 lb, too. Dave An­der­son (ZLT Angling Prod­ucts) topped a re­cent Sports­man AA Open match with 11 lb 8 oz 5 dr of bream on the Metro Bridge Sec­tion in Wed­nes­bury.
