New canal ‘fishing’ boom!
ANGLERS may be thin on the ground on the canal towpaths of Wales, but in their place there is an increasing number of people with handlines and wooden poles enjoying a sport that could overtake fishing.
Instead of hooks at the end of the lines, they have powerful magnets, and they are fishing for the scrap metal in various forms that seems to be abundant and fairly profitable.
Before you swap your size 20 hooks for magnets and try to recoup the cost of 16 metres of carbon by using it for metal detecting, be aware that there are dangers.
The ‘hip flask’ that a magnet fisher was unlucky enough to ‘catch’ in the Trevor Basin on the Llangollen Canal turned out to be a WW2 mortar, and triggered a major security alert involving the bomb disposal unit!
