HAT-TRICK OF A NEW KIND FOR BULLARD
Jimmy proves he’s as sharp at match fishing as he was on the football field
FORMER footballer Jimmy Bullard has scored his first ever angling hat-trick with three consecutive match wins.
The gifted all-rounder won his third midweek open in a row at Puddledock Farm in Essex with a 128lb 4oz net of carp and silvers.
“I’ve been lucky,” joked the ex-Wigan, Hull and Fulham midfielder. “It’s my first hat-trick and the lads gave me plenty of stick in the car park afterwards.”
The keen matchman, who is in the Daiwa Dorking squad, has regularly fished matches at Gold Valley and Willinghurst, but is enjoying a change of scenery at Puddledock.
“I just fancied a change,” he said. “It’s a snake lake and it offers active fishing with plenty of bites, which really suits my style. They are a good bunch of lads down there too, so it’s been blinding. There’s even a caff so I can stop at half-time for a burger and chips!”
He added: “The first time I went down there I drew next to Ross Harrold. That helped me no end, having a quality angler like him next to me. He’s been really helpful and I’ve just looked to keep it simple by fishing across, at 5m and down the edge.”
The 37-year-old, who appeared on ITV’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here in 2014, has often found fishing time hard to slot in, but is now able to commit to two matches a week. He said: “Venue regulars are always hard to beat, so you need to be fishing. I’m fully signed up now for Wednesdays and Sundays at Puddledock.”
Fishery boss Steve Mould said: “Jimmy’s a really nice guy and a bloody good angler. I drew next to him last week and all day I had to watch his elastic going out.”
His third win in a row came fishing up in the water across peg 54, before targeting the edges late on. He finished more than 38lb ahead of Ockendon Bait’s Steve Coppin in a field of 24.
