Target the upper layers for rudd

Angling Times (UK) - - TIPS & TACTICS -

ALTHOUGH they can be targeted using many tactics, rudd are suckers for baits fished on or just below the surface, especially in summer.

Their upturned mouths have evolved for taking food from above, so it’s little surprise that one of the best rigs for catching them when the sun is high is the sky is a small float supporting a bait about a foot below it, with no shot on the line between float and hookbait. Small loaded clear waggler floats are perfect, and require no shot down the line to help cock the float.

The best baits for rudd in the summer months are maggots, breadflake and breadcrust.
