How easy are river barbel on the float?
I’d like to try this tactic on the Severn
I’M no great fan of fishing the feeder, so was wondering how easy it is to catch barbel on the float. Could you suggest a simple rig that would work for me on the River Severn?

PROVIDED that you find the right swim, catching a barbel or two on the float should be relatively straightforward and it is definitely more exciting than using the feeder!
You’re aiming to find a deep run or channel down which you can run the float – either a waggler or a stick.
The stick will offer better float control and presentation, but can only be fished so far out and so is better suited to swims offering deep water at short range. It’s also a highly effective tactic to fish in shallow, uneven swims where the flow can be all over the place.
Here’s rig for tackling a typical swim around 8ft deep on the middle reaches of the Severn…
