HOW TO CATCH ‘DEEP SHALLOW’ ON THE POLE

Angling Times (UK) - - FRONT PAGE -

CAME across the term ‘deep shallow’ a few years ago while fishing a festival at White Acres. best on deeper venues, ideally lakes that are 6ft-plus. In a lake only 4ft deep it’s such a short way to the surface that carp will feed shallow and there is no need to look for them deeper down.

I have no real idea why it works, and why the fish don’t come higher on venues where it does. Is it down to pressure or simply because that’s where the fish are happy to feed?

Anyway, if you’ve got a deep lake where you struggle to catch fish up in the water, this might help…

WHICH BAITS ARE BEST?

For me it has to be hard pellets or meat. I normally use 6mm pellets but switch to 8mm for bigger fish, and for five hours’ deep shallow fishing around two pints is plenty.

I like using meat as skimmers and carp love it, and it sinks slowly too. I always use 6mm cubes, although my old Fisherman’s Friend cutter is a ‘big 6mm’.

As with pellets
