SHALLOW FISHING

Angling Times (UK) - - TIPS & TACTICS -

THE Mick Wilkinson Cookie has for years been my favourite float for shallow fishing on the long pole for F1s and carp.

It’s a short float with a dibberstyle tip and thick wire stem. This stem is vital for shallow fishing as it makes the float sit up as soon as it hits the water so that I’m fishing immediately. It’s at its best fished anything from 8ins to 18ins deep.

My set-up depends on size of fish and where I’m fishing. If I’m targeting carp and F1s from 1lb-6lb, I will use 0.15mm Guru N-Gauge mainline to a 4ins hooklength of 0.11mm.

Hook is a size 18 Guru LWG eyed with a micro bait band for pellets.

I kick off with a lightly strung bulk with the bottom shot 5ins from the hook and the rest spaced at 1ins intervals above this. However, if I am missing bites I will bulk the shot together 4ins from the hook. If I want to fish very shallow I will bulk all the shot under the float.
