NESTLED on the border of England and Wales lies one of the UK’s best river stretches.
The upper River Wye at Hay-on-Wye has been in fine form this summer, with anglers enjoying some amazing barbel and chub catches.
The stretch consists of two areas both offering day-ticket fishing. One is a short stretch of the town itself running upstream from the town bridge to Steeple Pool, below Warren Cottage. The other is about a mile long and runs from Warren Cottage upstream to the end of the stone wall at Lap Stone Pool near The Burlands.
On the town stretch, many anglers enjoy casting the feeder to the point of the island from Warren Cottage fishing the stretch. Others prefer to fish nearer the bridge, where big chub and bream to 6lb can often be caught. Pike to 30lb, with many averaging 20lb, can also be tempted here on deadbaits and spinning gear.

At the Burlands end of the stretch, the deep water allows for some classic barbel fishing with swim feeders, groundbait and halibut pellets proving day-ticket regulars have been reporting some cracking bags of small dace, roach and chublets on the Lido. Anglers are finding that pole and waggler are producing well with maggots or hemp as bait. Those who can flick a waggler to the far bank and spray maggots will enjoy sport from roach, dace and chub to 4lb.
