NES­TLED on the bor­der of Eng­land and Wales lies one of the UK’s best river stretches.

The up­per River Wye at Hay-on-Wye has been in fine form this sum­mer, with an­glers en­joy­ing some amaz­ing bar­bel and chub catches.

The stretch con­sists of two areas both of­fer­ing day-ticket fish­ing. One is a short stretch of the town it­self run­ning up­stream from the town bridge to Steeple Pool, be­low War­ren Cot­tage. The other is about a mile long and runs from War­ren Cot­tage up­stream to the end of the stone wall at Lap Stone Pool near The Bur­lands.

On the town stretch, many an­glers en­joy cast­ing the feeder to the point of the island from War­ren Cot­tage fish­ing the stretch. This de­light­ful wa­ter­way can be fished us­ing mag and wag in sum­mer for huge nets of chub, roach and dace.* Con­tact: Al­ces­ter Sports, 01789 762200 for the bar­bel and chub. Oth­ers pre­fer to fish nearer the bridge, where big chub and bream to 6lb can of­ten be caught. Pike to 30lb, with many av­er­ag­ing 20lb, can also be tempted here on dead­baits and spin­ning gear.

On the War­ren sec­tion, there are shal­low areas and deep Prices: £6 a day, in ad­vance from lo­cal tackle shops, Birmingham AA chan­nels pro­vid­ing plenty of op­tions for stalk­ing fish, or a more pa­tient ap­proach with swim­feed­ers or leger fish­ing. At the Bur­lands end of the stretch, the deep wa­ter al­lows for some clas­sic bar­bel fish­ing with swim feed­ers, ground­bait and hal­ibut pel­lets prov­ing day-ticket reg­u­lars have been re­port­ing some crack­ing bags of small dace, roach and chublets on the Lido. An­glers are find­ing that pole and wag­gler are pro­duc­ing well with mag­gots or hemp as bait. The shal­low gravel patch pro­vides firm ground for a seat­box or chair. Those who can flick a wag­gler to the far bank and spray mag­gots will en­joy sport from roach, dace and chub to 4lb.
