IF YOU’RE after a specimen crucian, then Godalming Angling Club’s Marsh Farm Fishery is arguably the best venue in the UK to catch one on.
It is home to the prestigious, members’ only Johnsons Lake, which has produced two British record crucians of 4lb 10oz in the past.
However, if you’re not a member of Godalming AC, there are three other lakes open to day-ticket anglers.
Here’s a breakdown of what’s on offer: lake plus a lake designed for beginners and families are here. Head to the Kingfisher Lake if you want to catch ghost carp and mirror carp to 14lb. The near shelf is a natural patrolling route for these fish and is the best place to start off on pellets and corn. Fish up in the water if the fish start to show shallow. You can expect to find true crucians to over 4lb, along with tench to 10lb-plus, roach and rudd to 2lb-plus, as well as perch to 3lb and chub to 4lb.
Most pegs here offer a chuck to an island and around 1.3m of water in front. However pegs 7 and 8 boast a small sunken island in front of the main island. The maggot feeder or pole fished here with casters, corn or breadpunch will score bites all day long. Richardson is similar to Harris, with three islands the main features to target. Pegs 7-13 all have sunken islands around 10m out.
Worm, caster and maggots will draw in the fish when potted in with hemp. Fish a worm head, double maggot or corn for crucians to 4lb-plus, tench to 10lb, roach and rudd to 2lb, perch to 3lb and also bream to 5lb. capable of produce decent catches on either waggler or long-range feeder tactics. The crucians go smaller here than in Harris or Richardson, but a fish of over 3lb is still a catch of a lifetime for many anglers. There’s also perch to 3lb, tench to 8lb as well as roach, rudd and gudgeon for match weights. Maggot over groundbait is a killer tactic.
