IF YOU’RE af­ter a spec­i­men cru­cian, then Godalming Angling Club’s Marsh Farm Fish­ery is ar­guably the best venue in the UK to catch one on.

It is home to the pres­ti­gious, mem­bers’ only John­sons Lake, which has pro­duced two Bri­tish record cru­cians of 4lb 10oz in the past.

How­ever, if you’re not a mem­ber of Godalming AC, there are three other lakes open to day-ticket an­glers.

Here’s a break­down of what’s on of­fer: lake plus a lake de­signed for begin­ners and fam­i­lies are here. Head to the King­fisher Lake if you want to catch ghost carp and mir­ror carp to 14lb. The near shelf is a nat­u­ral pa­trolling route for these fish and is the best place to start off on pel­lets and corn. Fish up in the wa­ter if the fish start to show shal­low. You can ex­pect to find true cru­cians to over 4lb, along with tench to 10lb-plus, roach and rudd to 2lb-plus, as well as perch to 3lb and chub to 4lb.

Most pegs here of­fer a chuck to an island and around 1.3m of wa­ter in front. How­ever pegs 7 and 8 boast a small sunken island in front of the main island. The mag­got feeder or pole fished here with cast­ers, corn or bread­punch will score bites all day long. Richard­son is sim­i­lar to Har­ris, with three is­lands the main fea­tures to tar­get. Pegs 7-13 all have sunken is­lands around 10m out.

Worm, caster and mag­gots will draw in the fish when pot­ted in with hemp. Fish a worm head, dou­ble mag­got or corn for cru­cians to 4lb-plus, tench to 10lb, roach and rudd to 2lb, perch to 3lb and also bream to 5lb. ca­pa­ble of pro­duce de­cent catches on ei­ther wag­gler or long-range feeder tactics. The cru­cians go smaller here than in Har­ris or Richard­son, but a fish of over 3lb is still a catch of a life­time for many an­glers. There’s also perch to 3lb, tench to 8lb as well as roach, rudd and gud­geon for match weights. Mag­got over ground­bait is a killer tac­tic.
