Videos boost mem­ber­ship num­bers

MANY of Bri­tain’s lead­ing angling clubs are en­joy­ing a boost in mem­ber­ship... and video is play­ing a huge part.

In or­der to get more an­glers to join their ranks, some of the UK’s most pop­u­lar clubs and as­so­ci­a­tions are pro­duc­ing in­struc­tional and pro­mo­tional films hosted by well-known an­glers, with im­pres­sive re­sults.

One club to have iden­ti­fied the ben­e­fi­cial role of angling celebri­ties is Row­ley & Dis­trict Angling So­ci­ety, whose stretch of the River Sev­ern at Coal­port has been pro­moted on screen by our own Des Tay­lor.

“There’s been lots of in­ter­est since Des helped us out,” said Max Tay­lor from R&DAS.

“Word of mouth just doesn’t work any­more…you have to get out there and get no­ticed if you’re go­ing to make your club a suc­cess,” he said.

“We are go­ing to be do­ing more and more stuff like this. The fact that you can also be­come a mem­ber on­line in min­utes by us­ing PayPal has also made a dif­fer­ence. The num­ber of new mem­bers that have seen one of our on­line videos and then joined has been very sur­pris­ing.”

Now Des and chiefs at R&DAS are urg­ing other clubs to use so­cial me­dia and other sim­i­lar on­line plat­forms to pro­mote their clubs in or­der to mod­ernise and not only at­tract new mem­bers, but also keep ex­ist­ing ones happy.

“Since I’ve been do­ing th­ese lit­tle videos on the club’s Face­book page talk­ing about the qual­ity of its river stretches they’ve got loads of new mem­bers, which is a joy to see and be a part of,” said Des.

“Clubs have to re­alise that this is the way for­ward and us­ing celebri­ties like me or lo­cal ex­perts to of­fer tips, tac­tics and ad­vice re­ally gives them some­thing fresh, ex­cit­ing and dif­fer­ent that’s go­ing to cre­ate a real buzz around the clubs and their wa­ters.

“Some of the best river fish­ing in the coun­try is avail­able on a club book and th­ese or­gan­i­sa­tions should be shout­ing it from the rooftops.

“It never ceases to amaze me how many clubs don’t even have a Face­book page and then moan that mem­ber­ship is down.”
