STARS GO ONLINE TO AID CLUBS
Videos boost membership numbers
MANY of Britain’s leading angling clubs are enjoying a boost in membership... and video is playing a huge part.
In order to get more anglers to join their ranks, some of the UK’s most popular clubs and associations are producing instructional and promotional films hosted by well-known anglers, with impressive results.
One club to have identified the beneficial role of angling celebrities is Rowley & District Angling Society, whose stretch of the River Severn at Coalport has been promoted on screen by our own Des Taylor.
“There’s been lots of interest since Des helped us out,” said Max Taylor from R&DAS.
“Word of mouth just doesn’t work anymore…you have to get out there and get noticed if you’re going to make your club a success,” he said.
“We are going to be doing more and more stuff like this. The fact that you can also become a member online in minutes by using PayPal has also made a difference. The number of new members that have seen one of our online videos and then joined has been very surprising.”
Now Des and chiefs at R&DAS are urging other clubs to use social media and other similar online platforms to promote their clubs in order to modernise and not only attract new members, but also keep existing ones happy.
“Since I’ve been doing these little videos on the club’s Facebook page talking about the quality of its river stretches they’ve got loads of new members, which is a joy to see and be a part of,” said Des.
“Clubs have to realise that this is the way forward and using celebrities like me or local experts to offer tips, tactics and advice really gives them something fresh, exciting and different that’s going to create a real buzz around the clubs and their waters.
“Some of the best river fishing in the country is available on a club book and these organisations should be shouting it from the rooftops.
“It never ceases to amaze me how many clubs don’t even have a Facebook page and then moan that membership is down.”
