WE SIMPLY DON’T NEED MORE CARP FROM THE CONTINENT...

Why import fish when there A are loads bred here?

Angling Times (UK) - - WELCOME -

S the scourge of KHV continues to cut its merciless swathe through our precious carp stocks, I cannot help but feel frustrated that the door is still open for potential carriers of the disease into our country.

We don’t need more carp from abroad – even ornamental koi are produced here in vast numbers and if enthusiasts want something ‘better’ then hard luck!

We especially don’t need, or want, more mutant hybrids. We have the ability and facility to produce more than enough, and F1s – ‘infertile and unable to grow bigger than 4lb’ – are reproducing, possibly even hybridising further with other cyprinids, and have grown into double figures.

Viruses live to spread. We have seen several animal viruses cross into humans. It’s almost guaranteed that KHV will infect other fish species Whoever said F1s couldn’t grow to 4lb was clearly delusional.
