Why I’m such a fan of bass

Angling Times (UK) - - WELCOME -

I WAS enthralled by Martin Bowler’s bass feature this week.

I caught my first bass nearly 60 years ago, from Exmouth beach in Devon, on a bunch of peeler crab legs and claws on a rolling leger – and a 7ft spinning rod!

I’ve had some great days since with Mike Williams on Firefox out of Dover where we had dozens to well over 10lb on live sandeels... classic bass fishing.

Similarly with Dave Gibson from Weymouth, out in Portland Race, where my friend Wendy Perry had a 12lb 2oz beast. In Cobh Harbour in 2014 I caught bass to 7lb on surface lures while my host, Kevin Murphy, had a sensational fish of 10lb 3oz.

I have also caught bass on plugs and poppers in Portugal, while in the USA I’ve caught striped bass and black sea bass, not to mention largemouth and smallmouth bass from her lakes and rivers. Yes, I understand why catching bass is so greatly in demand, and why anglers are fighting for their protection.
