Maggots are still a favourite bait of mine when fishing for barbel in low and clear conditions. When they are fed correctly barbel can become preoccupied with them, making them relatively easy to catch.

Barbel will find a big white patch of maggots glowing on the riverbed hard to resist, and my standard mag-aligner presentation is a proven winner as the pile of free offerings helps to disguise the rig.

Threading an Enterprise Tackle mag-aligner grub over the hook shank also forces the hook to turn aggressively when a fish sucks in the hookbait, leading to more hook-ups.
