What is a line clip used for?

MY reel spool has a small metal circle attached. What’s it for?

Dave Watkins, Hull

THIS is a line clip, and it has two main uses. First, simply slip your line behind it when the reel is not in use. This keeps everything tangle-free in your reel case.

The second use of a line clip is as a casting aid on a lake. Once you have cast to the distance you want to fish, slip your line behind the clip and subsequent casts will reach the same distance as long as you cast with the same force.

Used like this, line clips help you cast accurately but they should be used with care – a large fish could break your line if it swims away quickly before you can release the line from the clip.
