Selfless deed results in spooky 41lb 7oz Surrey fish

NE good deed deserves another, they say – and so it proved for Gavin Campbell when his selflessness led to the capture of this striking ghostie.

The fish, which weighed in at 41lb 7oz, had not been caught for two years and is the first 40-pounder from its Surrey home.

It was banked after Gavin, who learned to fish on the venue, helped his friend up his personal best.

“I took my mate to see if he could beat his 22lb pb,” said the 25-year-old, “and this place holds a fair few 30-pounders.

“After a few laps I found some fish in a bay and let him go first. He flicked a rig out 20 yards to a little spot I told him about and 20 minutes later he had a 33lb 1oz mirror in the net – job done!

“I was so happy for him and the swim had blown after the capture, so I baited a couple of margin spots half-heartedly and did a couple more laps.

“I was just saying ‘let’s go celebrate’ when I spotted a fish cruise over one of the spots – so I quickly tied up a rig and lowered it in.

“I then sat and watched as the fish I’ve seen growing for the last five years came feeding up the marginal shelf.

“To cut a long story short, she spun the needle round to 41lb 7oz after two years uncaught.

“She was my 13th thirty from the lake since learning to fish on there.

“What a gift for helping my buddy catch one, and what a couple of hours’ fishing that was!” Gavin concluded.
