WHAT a great result for England’s young anglers at the World Championships! There is little doubt that as a nation we sit right at the top of the coarse fishing league table.

I read comments about ‘and all without Sport England funding’ from people who should know much better. They are ill-informed and plain wrong.

Sport England isn’t about funding elite athletes and teams – it is all about increasing participation, from grass roots right through. Indeed, it is Sport England that funds the enormously successful Angling Trust Talent Pathway that has already provided members for the teams of young anglers that are doing so well under the cross of St George and the Angling Trust.

And that is just part of the money that the Angling Trust is able to access through Sport England’s direct funding. The current ‘Get into Fishing’ scheme is another beneficiary, where the salaries of the personnel operating the campaign are covered.

There are no teams and therefore no medals without participants, and I hope that is now recognised by those within angling who decry Sport England!
