Centrepins are back in vogue

-

DID you see the spectacular RiverFest results from the River Soar? On one zone only two anglers out of 20 failed to make double figures, yet ‘only’ 21lb won it... that was England international Steve Hemingray.

Zone 2 saw another England star, Sean Ashby, weigh 41lb 8oz of bream, with 27lb 14oz and 27lb 11oz second and third.

Zone 3 was also won with 21lb. Most of the weights were made up of bream, but barbel and chub also featured, and there were plenty of smaller fish caught too.

Most rivers are fishing their socks off right now. Perhaps this is accounting for what one manufacturer describes as a huge percentage increase in centrepin reel sales.

I enjoy fishing with them, and with big floats they have a definite edge over fixed-spools.

Some of the custom-built models available, built the traditional way, are stunning, and are definitely future antiques and a worthwhile investment.
