Did this big eel bite my line?

Angling Times (UK) - - JAMES ROBBINS: RIVER CHUB -

IS IT possible for an eel to bite through line? I hooked one last week but it came off and the line was cut clean with abrasions above the cut.

Jimmy Meek, Warrington

THE small teeth of eels are well capable of cutting through line, even thick stuff! What you hooked sounds like a big eel and even 0.19mm line might not be enough to land it.

Strike as early as possible to lip hook the fish. If an eel swallows the bait, it is easier for it to cut the line above the hook. When you hook one, keep the pole or rod high in the air and apply maximum pressure to get the eel off bottom and heading towards you. The sooner you can get it in the net, the less chance there is of being bitten off.
