Are these small river barbel farmed fish?
I AGREE with Gareth Newton’s sentiments (Letters, August 23) that it is great to see small barbel appearing in our rivers but could this be happening as a result of stockings as opposed to breeding?
The Environment Agency has been piling thousands of young barbel into rivers up and down the country in recent years and I would guess that most fish of this size that are now being caught are the product of the EA fish farm at Calverton, in Nottinghamshire.
I have no doubt that barbel are spawning, but the chances of the tiny fry surviving in our rivers when they go into flood must rate very low. Craig Harris, Weybridge
